INTERVIEW HARRY HAY

In 1948, Harry Hay began talking to friends about forming an organization for gay people. Two years later the Mattachine Society took root. Today, Harry Hay and 'loving companion' John Burnside are exploring a new aspect of their lives their spiritual awareness as gay people.

by Phil Nash

In 1931, Harry Hay was an 18 year old freshman at Stanford University. Not unlike most young men of the era, he began the process of "rushing" to be selected to join a good fraternity on campus. He never got into any of them, however. Simultaneously he was deliberately telling everyone he knew that he was gay. Without shame and without guilt, Harry methodically came out to scores of people he knew though his studies and extracurricular life over a period of several weeks. His actions, of course, were unprecedented. Harry claims that he only did what he did because he did not wish to be dishonest with anyone.

In 1948, Harry Hay began talking to his friends about forming an organization for gay people. It took him two years

to recruit any additional members for the group. In 1950, the Mattachine society took root due to Harry's perseverance; the organization, which underwent numerous alterations during the years, still exists in some cities. Harry disavowed it long ago and continued to explore new ideas and new awarenesses.

In the early Sixties, Harry met his "loving companion", John Burnside and the pair remained active in the homophile movement throughout the era.

For many years prior to Stonewall in 1969, Harry and John were among the very few who dared address gay issues publicly. Both men are acutely aware of the evolution of gay history and can speak it well; they have more than lived it-they have created it.

Harry and John have been in Denver recently discussing and planning the logistics of a new threshold in gay history-the spiritual movement of radical fairies. Beginning with discussions in Denver nearly two years ago, Harry and John have begun to advance ideas that gayness is more than a sexual preference, more than a lifestyle, and more than a "frame of mind." In essence, they and many in whom their ideas resonate have come to believe in gayness as a spiritual path and that the awarenesses gained by those who collectively explore these new insights into gay consciousness may discover truths which are essential to the survival and evolution of the human race.

Through the many year they have lived and loved, they have come to the awareness that the ponderous question we all raise as gay people about our relationship to the rest of humankind will not be answered. in a single lifetime. Perhaps a lifetime is only long enough to learn what those questions are.
